Print Layout in QGIS

Follow this beginner-friendly guide based on standard procedures from the Official QGIS Training Manual.
1. Create a New Print Layout
  • Open your prepared map project in QGIS.
  • Go to the top menu and select Project > New Print Layout....
  • Type a unique name for your map layout in the popup box, then click OK.
  • A new blank layout window will open.
2. Set Page Properties
  • Right-click on the blank white paper sheet in the center of the window.
  • Choose Page Properties… from the menu.
  • Look at the Item Properties panel on the right side.
  • Choose your paper size (such as A4) and pick your orientation (Landscape or Portrait).
3. Add the Map Canvas
  • Find the toolbar on the left side of the layout window.
  • Click the Add Map button (it looks like a small map page with a green plus or crosshair).
  • Click and drag a rectangle box across your blank white page where you want the map to sit.
  • The layers from your main QGIS screen will now appear inside that box.
4. Customize and Resize Elements
  • Use the Select/Move item tool from the left toolbar to click and drag the edges of your map to resize it.
  • Use the Move item content tool if you need to pan or shift the view inside your map frame without changing the frame size.
  • Add layout extras like a scale bar, north arrow, or legend using the respective add-item buttons on the left.
5. Save and Export Your Map
  • Save your main QGIS project to save the layout settings you just created.
  • Go to the top menu and select Layout to find export options.
  • Choose Export as Image, Export as SVG, or Export as PDF to save your final map to your computer.
